Islamic Principles and Family Stability: An Analytical Study on the Role of Religion in Preventing Divorce

Awad Abdulraheem Awad Al Dwairi

The study investigates to what extent Islamic teachings either promote marital stability or reduce the incidence of divorce amidst the growing international concern about marital conflict and its consequences on society. It was a qualitative research design to conduct a systematic review and thematic analysis of literature published between 2000 and 2024. Results indicate that shared religious activities, such as common prayer and spiritual support, bring about heightened emotional attachment and hardness for a couple. At the same time, moral training - particularly in pre-marriage counseling - provides them with the capabilities of overcoming economic and relational stressors successfully. Community supports, of which faith-based supports are part, provide some of the avenues through which mediation, counseling, and other concrete supports are availed during times of marital adversity. Islamic Finance education or that from Islamic Fintech therefore equips families with ways of meeting economic challenges. It makes them less vulnerable to financial stress, the number one cause of marital instability. Besides, the Qur'anic ethos and the Prophetic model of conduct bring discussion, forgiveness, and non-violent conflict resolution into sharp focus as ways to resolve conflict and reach reconciliation. Such findings identify Islamic teaching as an integral approach toward the improvement of marital resilience by reducing the incidence of divorce and, for that matter, enhancing social cohesion. The present study thus recommends that family policy promote pre-marital education, financial literacy programs, and strong community support through Islamic beliefs to have practical ways of enhancing marriage relationships and tackling modern family problems.
